Hip-hop has been synonymous with "unlikely recognition" lately. Kanye West
's impressive outing at the Brit Awards was only a preliminary of this year's unconventional rap accolades.
Memphis-based southern rap
collective Three-6-Mafia stunned the world by winning an Oscar
for their role on the Hustle & Flow
sountrack. In a relatively non-competitive category, Three-6-Mafia was acknowledged for their song "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp."
Remarkably, Three-6-Mafia's award for "Best Original Song" makes them the first hip-hop group to win and perform at the Oscars. Back in 2003, Eminem won the first ever hip-hop Oscar in the same category with his 8 Mile
soundtrack, "Lose Yourself."
